Name: Accessibility for real people
Description: This three-day practical course will enable you to work with web professionals and real assistive technology users to improve the accessibility of your own site. It offers the opportunity to meet people who use assistive technologies in their everyday life and to find out for yourself what it’s like to use technology such as screenreaders and screen magnifiers. This practical, hands-on course will benefit you if you are working in web site creation or management in any field where there is a need to provide accessible web sites which are compliant with recent legislation, whether in the public services, local government, health service, NGOs, education, new media, arts and any area of business. The course explains and demonstrates how people with disabilities use the web, bringing the technical guidelines to life. All training will be geared towards ensuring that accessibility is not seen as a one-off fix but as part of a long-term strategy that will bring multiple benefits to all website users. Real-world examples from experience of working with industry will be included and specific tips and techniques will be offered throughout. Highlights of the course include demonstrating participative design - involving users with disabilities in the development process, testing for accessibility with disabled assistive technology users, showing how to make Flash, audio and video accessible and how to make user generated content as accessible as possible.
